Transportation in Benin

Benin's transport network is built around two essentials: the zémidjan (motorcycle taxi, universally called "zem") and the bush taxi. In Cotonou, the country's main economic hub, zems are everywhere and are the fastest way to cover short urban distances, they weave through traffic that would otherwise trap a car for an hour. Shared taxis (clando) and minibuses handle both urban trips and longer intercity routes, typically departing from gare routière (road stations) when seats fill up rather than on a fixed schedule. There is no functional urban rail network, so ground transport is your full toolkit. For intercity travel, shared bush taxis connect Cotonou to Porto-Novo (the capital), Parakou (the main northern hub), and border towns toward Nigeria, Togo, and Niger. Budget travelers use minibuses. Those wanting more predictability and comfort should look for a full-taxi hire or a seat in a private shared car. Journey times vary significantly with road conditions, during rainy season, factor in extra time on any northern route. Buses operated by regional companies run longer routes but confirm schedules directly, as they can be irregular. From Cotonou's Cadjehoun Airport, taxis are available at the terminal and represent the standard airport transfer option, economy to mid-range in cost for the ride into central Cotonou. Agree on a fare before departing, as meters are not standard. Avoid accepting an offer before you've cleared the arrivals hall. Touts at the door typically quote inflated rates. Do not attempt the zem for your first airport-to-hotel trip with luggage, it is possible. But impractical with bags and disorienting if you don't yet know the city.
